WEEK 2 STORY: The Woman in the Wall

Once Upon a Time, there was an interior designer that loved to design homes for others. She was so talented, creative, and so good at her job that she went all over the nation to design houses. But, one day she was getting tired of designing homes. As she drove home from her office and walked into her house a twinkling star came shining across her yard and all of a sudden, a fairy was standing in front of her. Not knowing what to say or think, the Interior Designer stood there speechless. The fairy introduced her self, "I am the gratitude fairy and I'm here to remind you of all the things you have to grateful for." The interior designer replied, "I don't want to be an interior designer anymore. I'm so tired and just want to sit all day...I'd rather be a piece of furniture!" The gratitude fairy raised an eyebrow and said under her breath, "Be careful what you wish for." With her pretty wand and sparkly magic dust she turned the interior designer into a chair! A day went by and the once interior designer, now chair complained, "I don't want to sit around all day, I want to be a lamp it seems light and warm." So the gratitude fairy turned her into a lamp. Another day went by and the once interior designer, that turned into a chair, now a lamp, complained, "I hate being turned on and off everyday!" I want to be a rug, so I won't get moved around!" So the gratitude fairy turned her into a rug. A couple days went by and the once interior designer, then chair, then lamp, and now rug complained, "I getting stepped on all the time, I want to be apart of the wall, so I can see everything that's going on, and no one can mess with me." So the gratitude fairy turned her into a wall. And there she stayed and lives to this day.

  1. Hi Madee! Great story! I really enjoyed the modern spin that you put on your story. It really helps the reader to connect with the characters and give it such a fun tone. I loved that you decided to completely change the character from the original in the traditional tale, gender-swap and all! I think swapping genders is a great way of retelling these story assignments an really allows the reader to feel as if they are reading a completely different story, even if there are still plenty of similarities. Great job!

  2. This was a fun one! I liked how you listed all of the forms she had taken each time she changed, it kind of makes her actions seem a little more frivolous, which I guess is the moral. I also like how you made it a gratitude fairy. Definitely can't miss the lesson in this one. I'm looking forward to see what twists you put on the other stories.

  3. Hello, Madee!

Let me start off by saying that you wrote an incredibly creative story! I never would have thought of featuring an interior designer in my story. I am just not sure how she could get tired of designing homes. If she really loved designing homes, then isn’t that something that she would never get tired of? After all, everyone is always saying that you should find something you love doing and make that your career so you won’t hate going to work every day. I am curious to know why the fairy appeared in front of her specifically as well. Another question I have is if the interior designer has a mouth when she is turned into the various pieces of furniture. Or is she able to communicate telepathically with the fairy? Finally, I wonder why the fairy remained with the interior designer even after she changed her into a chair. I kind of thought that they would part way after the fairy did that for her.

  4. Hello, Madee!

I am going to give the "Let's Pretend" style comment a shot, so sorry if this comes out weird!

As your main character, why did I choose to go into a field that tires me out so much? Did I not realize just how much would be involved? Is it difficult for me to make money in this profession, thus forcing me to work long hours and take little time to rest? Perhaps you could give a bit more of my back story, regarding why I chose the field and how I got to the point that I really do not enjoy it any more and would rather be a piece of furniture. Also, am I content to live out the rest of my days as a wall, or do I complain about that, too? Does the fairy just ignore my complaints and disappear, leaving me to my fate? These are just some questions I would enjoy seeing explained a bit more, just so that my actions are better understood by readers! Over all, I really enjoyed how you told my story and think your writing is very creative and intriguing!

  5. Madee,

Great story! I liked how creative and unique your story was. I enjoyed reading this because it was light hearted and fun. I connected with the interior designer for I also constantly go back and forth with what I want my professor to be. I don’t think being a part of the wall is in future, but I definitely change my mind all the time. Did you ever consider explaining why the interior designer was tired of her job? I think if you did include a little information on why she was tired of being an interior designer it would allow the readers to sympathize with her or even relate to her on a deeper level. Overall, I really enjoyed reading your story, but I think if you add so more information in the introduction of the story. It will allow for the readers to get even more invested in the story and the interior designers’ journey to finding her place.

  6. Hey Madee,

Very fun story. Plus, in the light of a story about an interior designer, the layout of your blog is awesome. I really like whatever that background is. But the story- great take on a classic. It was a fantastic idea to keep all of the "job" or "roles" were within the theme of the original character. It was almost like the interior designer was taking a journey through a project that they were taking for granted. A lot more eight into your role if you see what it is like to be outside of that decision-making role. I will say I wanted to know more about the character and their issue with being an interior designer. That is- why did the fairy appear to her at all? It may not have been your goal to talk about the actual character though, and to focus on the theme of being grateful for what you do. Either way, great writing.

  7. Hey Madee,

I think most of the people above hit on some of the things you could potentially change in the story. I want to give you some support and say that I really enjoyed reading the story. It definitely is very tough to incorporate interior design into a story and I am very impressed. I also really liked how your layout looks as it certainly makes me think of interior design and compliments the story very well. Great job and have a great finals week.
